WeChat Pay is the payment layer inside WeChat, the super-app 1.3 billion Chinese people use for everything. If Alipay is China's wallet, WeChat is China's entire phone. For travelers the good news is identical: since 2023, WeChat Pay accepts foreign Visa, Mastercard, Amex, JCB and Discover cards.
Setup in 5 steps
- Download WeChat, register with your mobile number, set language to English.
- Me → Services → Wallet → add your card under 'Bank Cards'.
- Verify your identity with passport details when prompted.
- Turn on 'Wallet' quick access from the home screen for faster QR scanning.
- Link the same card to 'Ride Code' / Transport for metro QR payments.
Fees: same story as Alipay
Small payments under roughly ¥200 are fee-free; above that expect ~3% processing on foreign cards plus your bank's FX fee. Rates are the standard card-network rates. Set a daily spending reminder in the app if you're the impulsive type.
Why you want BOTH apps
- Some merchants only take one — a QR code is either green (WeChat) or blue (Alipay).
- If one card link breaks at a critical dumpling moment, the other saves dinner.
- Group splitting: WeChat is where locals split bills and red-packet money.
- WeChat doubles as your contact channel for hotels, guides and new local friends.
Troubleshooting
Common failure: your bank blocks the first charges as suspicious — pre-warn them you're traveling. If card binding loops on verification, use the in-app 'Help' (there's an English support path) or bind a different card. Debit cards generally bind more smoothly than premium credit cards.
