WhatsApp has been blocked in mainland China since 2017 — messages hang forever, calls fail, and no error explains why. It works normally in Hong Kong and Macau. In mainland China you need your traffic routed outside the Great Firewall, which means either an internationally-routed travel eSIM or a VPN installed before arrival.
Your three options
- Travel eSIM with international routing — WhatsApp just works, zero configuration. Simplest option.
- VPN on a local SIM/hotel Wi-Fi — works, with occasional slow periods around sensitive dates.
- WeChat — the local answer. Everyone in China uses it; QR-code 'add friend' beats phone numbers anyway.
What about other apps?
- Also blocked: Instagram, Facebook, X/Twitter, YouTube, Gmail (all Google), Telegram, Signal, TikTok's international version, most news sites.
- Working: WeChat, Alipay, DiDi, Apple Maps, Spotify (spottily), your banking app (usually), airline apps.
- Rule of thumb: if it's Western social or Western search, assume blocked.
