China is easy to travel once you know its rules — and brutal to improvise. These fifteen mistakes account for roughly all first-timer misery. Each has a one-line fix.
The money & phone mistakes
- Mistake 1: Arriving without Alipay/WeChat Pay set up. Fix: install and link your card at home.
- Mistake 2: Bringing cash as a backup plan. Cash barely works; a linked card in Alipay does.
- Mistake 3: Assuming a Chinese SIM unblocks Google/WhatsApp. It doesn't — get an internationally-routed eSIM.
- Mistake 4: Installing your VPN after landing. The app store won't let you. Before flying only.
- Mistake 5: Trusting Google Maps pins. They're offset by law. Use Amap or Apple Maps.
The planning mistakes
- Mistake 6: Scheduling too many cities. China is huge; 3–4 cities in two weeks is plenty.
- Mistake 7: Visiting during Golden Week (Oct 1–7) or Chinese New Year without booking everything months ahead.
- Mistake 8: Skipping the Forbidden City booking (sells out) while assuming walk-up entry.
- Mistake 9: Not booking train tickets ~15 days out in peak season.
- Mistake 10: One night per city. You lose half of each day to logistics.
The on-the-ground mistakes
- Mistake 11: Eating at restaurants beside major attractions. Walk 10 minutes away; quality doubles, prices halve.
- Mistake 12: Taking airport taxi touts. Official rank or DiDi, always.
- Mistake 13: Assuming 'not spicy' is a real option without saying 'bù yào là' explicitly.
- Mistake 14: Skipping breakfast street food out of caution. Jianbing at a busy stall is peak China.
- Mistake 15: Leaving no buffer. Flights, trains and streets are wonderful until they're not — build in slack.
